Stress Can Kill You - Job Satisfaction Tips For Telecommuting Workers

Being a telecommuting employee can have both its advantages and disadvantages. While the job satisfaction most remote employees feel relates to the benefit of added time spent with families, there are other aspects of being a virtual employee that can be addressed to help increase and maintain a telecommuter's overall job satisfaction.

Tip #1 - Go out and socialize. There is no need to be a hermit when working from home. A job is a job. It is part of your life and as such you, the employee, need to go out and live it. Being chained to your computer all day is not good for both your physical as well as your emotional health. If a workaholic, bring the job with you and socialize with professional business organizations.

Tip #2 - Give back to the community. If you have ever received help or mentoring in your career, don't you think it is time to give back? Become a volunteer with Junior Achievement and put your business skills to good use mentoring the next generation of business professionals. A good way to justify volunteering is to donate an hour a week from the ten-plus hours now saved telecommuting.

Tip #3 - Stop and smell the roses. It is tempting to forget about break time; especially when there is no one supervising your work but you. Taking a breather and going outside to stop and enjoy the day may leave you feeling more satisfied than you think. Time passes quickly and before you know it seasons change. Part of job satisfaction is creating a work/life balance. By taking time to appreciate the little things in life, you are able to clear your mind and return to your job feeling refreshed.

Tip #4 - Take care of yourself. Being tired and rundown will not help your job performance. Be sure to eat healthy, embark on an exercise routine and maintain a good night's sleep every night. While tempted to get up in the middle of the night to work on an idea, keep a pad and pen near your bed to jot down any ideas that come to mind. During your downtime, your job can wait. Sleep well so you can be alert and rested to perform your job the next day.

Even telecommuting jobs can be stressful. Taking the time out for you is important. It not only helps you avoid the stress, but it helps you perform better. After all, why telecommute if you can't keep your job?
