Working From Home - Will it Be a Home Job Or Home Business?

Let's just start by saying that most of us would like to work from home. According to a recent survey, about 45 million Americans earn from home while on the job. And, based on information from the US Bureau of Statistics, about 150 million Americans enjoy the benefits of a home based business. So what is the best choice, home based job or home based business? This is the dilemma that faces most of us when considering an income from home.

Let's evaluate the advantages of both from the perspective of freedom and security. I think you would agree that the presence of both of these factors would be enough to coax a move away from the office, for either a telecommute or a work at home business.

Jobs, by their nature, offer a sense of security. If you can work your job from home, a bit of freedom is also available to you. However, you still have a boss and an agenda to complete daily. If the job does not get done every day while telecommuting from home, how long will that job last? If you have a change in bosses, could that end your telecommuting job opportunity? For these reasons, freedom and security are always in question in the job realm.

If a work at home business opportunity is available, could you achieve more freedom and security working a home based business? I would say, "yes." Here's why.

A skill set is required by all the legitimate work from home businesses out there. Acquire that skill set and you have created in a sense, security for yourself. Let me give you an example. Imagine you went to college for five years to become an architect. You go to work for a firm and a poor economy forces them to lay you off. You still have your skills, so another job is imminent. Therefore, is the "job" your security or is it the architectural "skill set" you possess that determines your security?

In that same way, in my profession as an internet marketer I had to learn a skill set to operate my business. It is that skill set, not the particular online product or service that I market that will determine my security and ultimate financial freedom on the internet. Understand that if you are an online marketer, products and services may come and go, but your skills will improve with time and allow you to make a living progressively easier on the web.

Freedom, which could be defined as "having more free time while earning more money," might be difficult to attain with a job. Your income from most jobs is determined by replacement cost. It is very difficult to increase your income at a job even if you were to improve your skill set. The pyramid shape of most traditional businesses allows only a select few to enjoy the benefits of higher incomes while rising to the top. Telecommuting can increase productivity and maybe freedom, but the job still limits the income.

Freedom and security are probably the main motivators behind just about every decision we make. If most of us understood that we could create a secure and free lifestyle working from home as business owners versus telecommuting from a job, the home business turnstiles would start spinning out of control. In a way, I'm glad this internet work from home lifestyle is still the best kept secret. We want only the best of the best to work with us, so please only consider starting a work at home web business if you fit that description. Saves more for us.
